The previous four years under Tyrone Willingham are a black mark for any Washington Husky football fan. The stoically dour Willingham did not endear himself to many on his way out of Montlake.
I was on the bus to Seattle Center last night, when I remarked to my friends about how big name recruits should pick Washington because our program is in the dumps and would provide them ample early playing time.
Suffice to say, my comments elicited several chuckles and comments about Seattle sports from the riders who could hear me.
So now that I've beat it into your head that Willingham is essentially a pariah, you'd be interested to know that he got a new job... and promptly let it slip through his fingers.
The rest of his staff has been able to find jobs up until this point, with some landing at posh destinations along the way. Randy Hart is the defensive line coach at Notre Dame, and Brian White landed as the tight end coach for Florida. Pretty good for a staff that went 0-12
Willingham was hired as the running backs and special teams coach for the United Football League's San Francisco franchise.
Willingham would be working for Dennis Green, the man most known for this these days. However, Green and Willingham go back many years, working together at Stanford and the Minnesota Vikings.
For those that don't know, the United Football League (UFL), is a new league meant to serve predominantly under-served football markets and provide a destination for undrafted players.
How San Francisco is under-served for football I have no clue. With the San Francisco 49ers and the Oakland Raiders representing the NFL and Cal, Stanford, and San Jose State representing college football.
I digress of course, while Tyrone Willingham was slated to join the San Francisco team, they were unable to come to a deal in the end.
For about a day Willingham was able to proudly state he wasn't an outcast for his last two coaching stints. Yet, it didn't work out for him, and it may not on a big time level again. There is too much risk involved.
In the meantime, he got a million dollar lump sum upon his termination last year that most people would love to have right now.
We'll see where he ends up.
